Background of the Study
Social media platforms, particularly Twitter, have become powerful arenas for semantic innovation in Nigeria. Hashtags on Twitter encapsulate complex ideas and serve as catalysts for linguistic change by promoting new semantic trends (Umeh, 2023). This study examines how social media engagement influences semantic trends in Nigerian discourse, focusing on the proliferation and evolution of Twitter hashtags. Hashtags serve not only as topical markers but also as vehicles for semantic creativity, where users repurpose and reinterpret language in innovative ways. By analyzing a corpus of trending hashtags and their associated tweets, the study explores how lexical meanings shift in real time and how user engagement—through retweets, likes, and comments—reinforces or modifies these semantic trends (Adebayo, 2024). The research investigates the dynamic interplay between user interaction, digital culture, and language evolution, contributing to broader discussions on digital semantics and public discourse in Nigeria (Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the transformative impact of social media on language, there is limited research on how Twitter engagement shapes semantic trends in Nigeria. The rapid evolution of hashtag meanings and the variability in user interpretations present challenges in understanding long-term semantic shifts (Umeh, 2023). This research gap hampers efforts to document and analyze digital language change, making it difficult to ascertain whether these trends signify enduring linguistic innovations or transient fads (Adebayo, 2024). The lack of systematic analysis limits the development of strategies for harnessing social media for effective communication and cultural expression. This study addresses these issues by examining the semantic evolution of Twitter hashtags, providing a foundation for further research on digital semantics (Ibrahim, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To analyze semantic trends in Nigerian Twitter hashtags.
To evaluate the role of social media engagement in shaping these trends.
To determine the long-term impact on Nigerian semantic evolution.
Research Questions:
What semantic shifts are evident in trending Twitter hashtags?
How does user engagement influence these semantic trends?
Are these changes indicative of lasting language evolution?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the influence of social media on Nigerian semantic trends, offering insights into digital language evolution. The findings will benefit linguists, social media analysts, and policymakers by informing strategies to harness online discourse for cultural and communicative innovation (Ibrahim, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to analyzing Twitter hashtags among Nigerian users and does not cover other social media platforms.
Definitions of Terms:
Semantic Trends: Shifts in the meanings and usage of words.
Twitter Hashtags: Keywords or phrases preceded by a hash symbol used to index topics on Twitter.
Social Media Engagement: Interactions by users, such as likes, retweets, and comments.
